Sandra Bullock may already have done the time-tripping thing in last year's THE LAKE HOUSE, but it's deja vu all over again with PREMONITION, a hopeless head-scratcher of a ponderous thriller about a suburban wife and mother who one day is informed that her husband has been killed in a terrible car crash, only to wake up the next day to find him alive and well. But that's only the start of this logistically impenetrable, low-rent MEMENTO that grows more confusing by the day as Bullock's traumatized lead character feverishly attempts to piece together the jumbled 24-hour periods of a particularly hellish week.

Unconvincingly folding together domestic drama with time-bending suspense and personal-stakes analytical thrills, PREMONITION represents Sandra Bullock's worst starring vehicle in a decade. Spare in design, detail and cogent thought, the film is a mock investigative thriller which unfolds over the course of one jumbled week and ultimately collapses under its own accumualted weight. (...) Kelly's script makes the leap from tedious and head-scratching to laughably derisible in its final third. For the bulk of the movie there are no sustained attempts to truly dissect Linda's presentiments, or confer importance on her. Late in the film, though, a priest is introduced in one scene to attempt to frame Linda's eerie intuitions, and situate it with respect to faith and historical precedent. (...) Bullock and Julian McMahon evidence no great chemistry with one another.

Arpentant les mêmes territoires que MÉMENTO et autres SIXIÈME SENS, le réalisateur Mennan Yapo (...) a du mal à maintenir le suspense. Le récit (...) s'oriente en effet plutôt vers une exploration de la vie conjugale, sans toutefois véritablement bien creuser ce thème. Ainsi, on se retrouvera très vite dans un récit aux accents surnaturels qui n'a plus beaucoup de sens. Le puzzle qu'on essaie de reconstruire comporte en effet trop d'éléments disparates pour vraiment bien nous occuper l'esprit. À vrai dire, on nous fait inutilement emprunter certaines pistes. On en vient ainsi très vite à ressentir cette désagréable impression de s'être fait mener en bateau de façon parfaitement gratuite. Certains spectateurs s'abandonneront quand même à ce jeu; d'autres en ressortiront profondément agacés. Sandra Bullock, qui nous a prouvé récemment qu'elle pouvait composer de vrais personnages (CRASH, INFAMOUS), semble de son côté un peu limitée par les contraintes du genre. De sorte qu'elle ne parvient jamais à transmettre de façon vraiment convaincante le tourment intérieur de cette femme. La façon qu'a le réalisateur de constamment braquer la caméra sur elle en multipliant les gros plans ne fait justement qu'accentuer cette impression.
