PATHFINDER mélange BRAVEHEART et APOCALYPTO sans aucun complexe, il s'agit bel et bien d'un authentique sous-produit de série B. PATHFINDER fait l'effet d'une bande-annonce de deux heures, et ce dès le générique qui ferait à lui seul une excellente publicité de film. D'une violence extrême et explicite, façon Gibson, PATHFINDER laisse pourtant l'impression d'un film pour préadolescents. (...) Les dialogues, par leur fausse profondeur, frisent parfois le ridicule, d'autant plus qu'à peu près tous les acteurs ici sont assez mauvais ou (...) très mal dirigés.

Like a romantic comedy, in which you know the principals have to get together, PATHFINDER has no suspense. Obviously, Ghost is going to kill every Viking on the American continent, and the only open question, neither a point of interest nor concern, is whether he will survive the process. Thus, because we know what will happen, the trick of the movie is to make the "how" of it interesting. But Nispel doesn't really try to do that. Instead he tries to convince us that we're seeing something important. (...) This isn't just bad, it's boring, and it's difficult to imagine who'd enjoy this: One guy gets stabbed ("Ahhhh!"), another gets slashed ("Ahhhh!"), and another gets his throat cut ("Glub, glub"). Times that by about 20, at least.

PATHFINDER is one of the funniest films of the year. That's not good news for this attempted action-adventure, which clearly lost its way in its own copious fog. (...) PATHFINDER is inspired by an Oscar-nominated 1987 Norwegian film (OFELAS) but relocated from Lapland to North America for the Vikings-and-Indians angle. This preposterous version is aimed strictly at teenage boys, with its arterial sprays and mysterious machismo.

Director Nispel is a German-born TV commercial/rock video whiz with an arresting visual style. But the script by Laeta Kalogridis (...) isn't strong on dialogue: The Vikings speak Icelandic (with subtitles) and the Indians speak largely in aphorisms, cliches and mini-sermons. The movie is at its best with the action scenes, like the astounding cliffhanger at the end, a CGI-free scene in which the Vikings and Ghost swing on a huge rope on the mountainside in the midst of a snowy landslide. But it doesn't really balance the action with humanity, drama or humor. The gnarly decor of Pathfinder's treehouse, with its wind chimes, is about as humanly eccentric and warm as PATHFINDER gets.

Beautifully shot, and strangely placid for a movie featuring constant, unyielding, violent images, PATHFINDER is destined to split audiences because it doesn't look like what we expect a fantasy graphic novel to look like, and it doesn't contain the lurid, sexy side of the genre. That doesn't mean it's not worth your time, but you won't get moved by this film. Just entertained.
