DOA is a film that boys aged 12 to 15 are going to lap up thanks to endless shots of Valance and her curvy co-stars in their swimsuits. But with a plot even flimsier than the bikinis, there’s nothing here for the rest of us. (...) Based on a video game and stealing from MORTAL KOMBAT and STREET FIGHTER, there are some reasonable stunts - meaning the film, stupid though it is, rarely gets boring.

Like the woeful STREET FIGHTER film before it, DOA contrives a tedious scenario that rushes between its set pieces, propelled by characters less interesting than their pixelated counterparts. The fights themselves lack both kick and grace. Interestingly, an overabundance of computer effects and jumpy nervous editing renders the decent choreography mute and unreadable.

This bubblegum action/martial-arts picture is based on the video game series of the same name, and the film, like the game, features sexy babes in bikinis a great deal: there's even some beach volleyball as a respite from the ass-kicking. The über-villain is played (...) by poor Eric Roberts, brother of Julia, and he walks and talks as if his head has been used for kickboxing practice.
